The origins of data cleaning and enrichment processes have been documented to maybe give you some perspective on why our DataMate was developed. From 2015 and 2021, our founders were relentlessly publishing RFQs and co-ordinating the responses. They were analysing and negotiating freight for some of the largest companies in the world. One thing stayed consistent, how inconsistent the data was. 

So what makes data 'bad'?

Bad data is rampant across the freight and logistics industry as a whole and engrained in every facet of operations. In this article, I’ve tried to distil the 3 reasons why it occurs in our line of business.

1. Human error is prevalent when data automation isn’t applied to end-to-end systems and processes. For every stage of source to pay that isn’t automated, there will be an increased chance of human error. 

2. Logistics standards are anything but standard. Every geo-political region that is traversed during international freight movements increases layers of complexity, specifically in terms of nomenclature. For example, how estimated time or arrival is defined varies wildly between major ports in China versus major ports in Europe. Gene Seroka, Executive director at the port of LA once said that standards aren’t the problem, agreeing on which standard to use is the problem. 

3. Multiple data input formats create non-standardized processes for information management. Very simply put, if you get a .xls shipment file from a freight forwarder, each row that defines a shipment has probably been passed backwards and forwards over 10 times between parties. The likelihood is that data is stored in at least two maybe even three sources. By the time you’ve processed it once, that’s now three or four iterations of the same data row. Which one of them is correct and how do you audit that?
